Married v Singles

A chance to remember past times and players.

The Married v Singles game on New Years Day 2009, brought to mind that this was an annual occasion, where present players and those from the past got to meet together on the pitch and afterwards in Flashes to have a few drinks and remember past games and glories.

While all our memories are not always of victories, we have had some great occasions over the years and nearly everyone can remember a few. Trophies and medals have not always been, the be all and end all of playing soccer, but when they came our way we always celebrated.

While the Annual match is now played for the John Considine Shield, the singles have won more of the games over the 20 years it has been played. I must point out that on 2 occasions it has not taken place, but on both occasions the sessions have gone ahead.

It is good to see that schoolboys from the early years are now playing for the Married side.

Those who have played for the Club, have in the majority gone on to do better things in life, and some of them have families of their own.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind, all who have played or are playing for the Club, of those who are not with us anymore.

The following are those, members who are no longer with us, and as you read this just take a minute to remember them.

Patrick Pa Duffy, Steven Chopper Browne, Thomas and Alan Boyce,

Mark Burton, John Considine, Willie McLoughlin Snr,

Michael McNamara, Jeff ODonnell, Steven Brains OGrady,

Ian Higgins, Eamonn Mulcahy.

May they rest in peace.

Their families will always remember them, but I hope that as a Club, they will always be spoken of with fond rememberance when we meet on New Years Day.

Singles win 2012 in Seanchoill

Singles win 2012 John Considine Trophy.

No doubt about it the Singles have a big advantage when we play the Annual Married v Singles  for the John Considine Trophy, in Seanchoill. But on the day when keeping ledgends Mattie McLoughlin for the singles and Pat Butler for the marrieds, were in top form, with both, turning back the grandfathers clocks as they made a number of saves. The singles got the better start with scores from Darren McNamara and Craig Madigan taking deflections to beat Pat Butlers defence. The second period saw a Dave Shine effort blocked by Mathias and shan Bridgeman slotted home the rebound. With time running out Ken OBrien Jnr picked up a knee injury and while he was leaving the field Tony Flynn levelled. With the wind in their sails the Married pushed forward, but a controversial penalty to the Singles saw Mark Noonans side go in front again with Darren McNamara slotting home. On the stroke of full time the singles got a 4th that they barely deserved. Best for the Married were Dave Shine, Ken OBrien, Niall Ward and Mark Kelly.  the Singles were ably served by Pat ONeill, Gareth Butler, Donal Walker and for one appearance only Mark Noonan. As I said the keepers were the real stars and we look forward to seeing them in training for next year. The Married fielded 4 keepers, Ger Madigan, Terry McDonnell, John Higgins and Pat Butler.

As the Chairman has posted in the comments page, we hope ythat more players past and present will turn out in the future. Surely we dont need to contact everyone individually.

Married win the 2011 game

New Years Day game 2011

Married 3, Singles 2. Scorers Married Sham Bridgeman, Frankie Walsh 2. Singles Ronan Gallagher, Craig Madigan.

Our first New Years Day game in Knockalisheen produced a cracker with both teams doing their best to get the bragging rights for the next 12 months.

The married side began the better playing some great football that had the young lads running in circles. A cross from the left by Frankie Walsh saw Sham Bridgeman turn back the years and score with a diving header that gave Dave Behan no chance. Ronan Gallagher levelled with a looping header over Ger Madigan (who decided to clean the boots and turn out against his son Craig who was wearing his FAI medals under his jersey). Brian Madden was introduced as sub and he made a mark on the game with his defence splitting pass to Frankie Walsh to restore the Marrieds lead, which they took into the break. The Marrieds use of the subs Dave Nash, Mark Kelly and Brian Madden, was going to be important as the Singles started to get on top, they were able to introduce Bob Collins and Craig Madigan early in the game. A number of chances by the singles were ably dealt with by Ger Madigan and his defence and Craig Madigan was beginning to get frustrated with his fathers saves, but after Ger turned away another shot, the defence were unable to prevent Craig from scoring from 2 yards out. The Married were not without their chances but Carl ODonovan and Frankie Walsh were frustrated with the offside decisions against them. Frankie Walsh finally beat the trap and lobbed Dave Behan for that all important winner. The Singles were worried now and took to cheating with 12 players on the field for the final few minutes, Mark Noonan was not giving up his crown too easy. But yet again the experience of Drico and Ken was to the fore as they pointed out to the ref that the singles had 12 on.

This was one of the better games that I have seen and it is credit to all who took part. For the singles Dave Behan, Matt Turner, Danny Lynam, Craig Madigan and Jeffrey OBrien were to the fore while, Ger Madigan, Tommy Bridgeman, Ian Curtin, Dave Shine and Shane Treacy were to the fore for the Married.

Singles win 2010 game

Another win for the singles as they beat the married by 6 goals to one. Darren McNamra and Mark Lonergan put the singles 2 up early on, but Willie OShaughnessy headed home just before the break to cut the lead. In the second half John Cunningham, Mark Lonergan, Colm OBrien and Darren Plunkett completed the scoring. It was good to see the return of a number of players with the Singles calling Mark Noonan and Mattie McLoughlin out of retirement. While Ger OBrien and the evergreen Nigel Devine also togged out for the Marrieds. Terry McDonnell was the winning Capt and he says its his last game for the singles, he hopes to play for the Married team next year.

Singles win 2009 with penalty shoot out win

The John Considine trophy was again won by the singles following a 1,all draw, on a penalty shootout. It was a case of the better eyesight of the younger players winning out. Frankie Walsh gave the singles the lead but Dave Shine scored a cracker from 3 yards out to level matters before the shootout settled matters.
